THE SECURITY GUARD WHO ALWAYS NODDED AT ME — I NEVER LEARNED HIS NAME UNTIL ONE NIGHT WHEN HE TURNED AROUND AND DID SOMETHING THAT MADE MY SKIN CRAWL

“Are you sure she’ll pass here?”

“She won’t leave without coming through this way. I’ll get the information from that security guard.”

My fear grew even stronger. But Gabriel? He wasn’t afraid. He held my arm and whispered:

“Ma’am… run. Don’t look back.”

So we ran.

Fast, quiet, breathless. He led me toward the maintenance exit near the old parking shed.

When the men heard us moving, they shouted.

“Hey! They’re there!”

I heard heavy footsteps getting closer. But instead of continuing to run, Gabriel turned to face them.

“Sir! No! Don’t!” I shouted.

But he simply raised his hand to silence me.

“Ma’am, it’s my job to protect you. From the moment you started saying ‘good morning’ every day, I already knew I wouldn’t let anyone hurt you.”

Then everything happened at once.

A shout.
A punch.
A body hitting the ground.

The sounds mixed together.

Until bright lights appeared—police officers had arrived. The two men ran, but one of them was quickly caught.

And Gabriel?

He was lying on the ground, breathing heavily but still alive. His face was scratched, and blood ran from his lip.

“Gabriel!” I knelt beside him. “I’m so sorry… this happened because of me—”

He shook his head weakly.

“Ma’am… I don’t need your apology.”

He gently took my hand.

“I just need you to know… that you matter. And sometimes… just one smile from someone is enough to make another person willing to protect them.”

I cried. I couldn’t stop it.

“Gabriel… thank you.”

He smiled—the first real smile I had ever seen from him.

“Good evening, ma’am.”
