Determined to reclaim control, Bates began making deliberate, sometimes difficult changes to her daily habits. She paid close attention to how her body responded to food, learning one simple yet powerful act of restraint. “I just pushed the plate away,” she explained.

It sounds almost deceptively simple — but for Bates, it marked a profound shift in mindset. She also reworked her diet and avoided eating late at night, small decisions that added up to life-altering results. And the impact went far beyond the scale.

Bates revealed that her transformation significantly improved her battle with lymphedema — a painful condition that causes swelling due to lymph fluid buildup. “It’s been a tremendous benefit for me,” she said, noting how much more manageable the condition has become.

Her health journey, however, has never been straightforward. Over the years, Bates has faced devastating medical challenges, including ovarian cancer in 2003 and breast cancer in 2012 — battles that left both physical and emotional scars.

“I was in a lot of pain,” she said in a past interview, recalling the intensity of her suffering. At one point, she asked doctors for stronger medication — but what happened next left a lasting impression.

After taking a prescribed pill, Bates experienced a startling realization about the dangers of dependency. “My whole body was just gone. There was no pain anywhere,” she said. “I thought, ‘I get it. I get why people want this.'”
