Today, around 11 a.m., Clara returned home after a four-month business trip.

She hadn’t called ahead to let her husband or son know she was coming.

In her bag, she carried some vegetables, a piece of meat, and a few treats that she knew both her husband and son liked.

Clara just wanted to cook something warm for them, like she used to before work and life had taken her away from small domestic routines.

As she climbed the stairs of the building, the silence hit her and left her paralyzed.

There was no music.

No television.

Nothing at all.

She knocked once. Then she knocked a little louder.

No answer.

Her stomach sank. Something about the quiet was different, wrong, uncomfortably so.

The door was slightly ajar.

Clara pushed it open gently, calling out: “David? Jamie?”

The apartment seemed abandoned.

Dust motes floated in the slanting sunlight, landing on furniture that hadn’t been moved in months.

The kitchen, usually the center of warmth, smelled faintly of neglect.

She set down her bag carefully, trying to steady her racing thoughts.

—Maybe they went out for brunch —she whispered to herself—. They didn’t know I was coming.

She started putting vegetables and meat on the counter, preparing to make something simple and comforting.

Then she heard a faint sound coming from the living room.

A low, muffled sob.

Clara froze.

She ran to the source.

In the corner, huddled under a blanket, was Jamie, her ten-year-old son. His face was buried in his arms, shaking.

—Jamie! —Clara cried, rushing to him.

He didn’t respond at first.

—Mom? —he finally whispered, his voice raw—. Mom… something’s wrong.

Clara’s heart sank. Something in his tone, in his posture, told her this was more than a child missing his mother.

—Tell me, Jamie. What happened?

He lifted his head slowly, tears streaking his cheeks.

—It’s Dad… he’s gone.

Clara blinked. Her mind spun.

—Gone? —she asked, her voice trembling.

—He… he didn’t wake up this morning. I… I tried to call you, but I didn’t know how. I didn’t want to bother you while you were away.

Clara felt the floor drop beneath her.

Her husband, the man she had shared ten years of her life with, was dead.

The realization made her knees weak. She sat down beside Jamie, holding him close, her mind racing, unable to comprehend the sudden emptiness.

Hours passed in a blur. Clara called authorities, informed relatives, and arranged for the necessary procedures.

Even amid the practical chaos, her thoughts kept returning to the odd silence she had noticed upon entering the apartment.
